Studying is in no way whatsoever free. Next to university fees, costs for books, programmes and technical equipment, we also have to worry about rent, heating and energy costs, as well as insurance, public transport and much more. Despite the rising cost-of-living crisis pushing prices to unbearable heights, the financial support for students continues to be too low to finance our student lives. Already long before rising prices most students had to work next to university, now money is tight even despite their part-time jobs. The consequences of this can, in the worst case, mean living in constant fear of not being able to afford everyday life and even dropping out of university. We don’t want our education and therefore our futures to be gambled with. We want fair studying conditions, an education affordable for everyone – even in times of crisis. We want a university in which it doesn’t matter where you’re from or how much money your parents earn. Anyone that wants to study should be able to.

Loud for just financial support: rethinking the study-grant system
Housing is a basic need and should be affordable for everyone! We students often have to spend the majority of our income on housing. The current cost-of-living crisis, as well as unbridled speculation on the housing market have blown the prices of our apartments sky-high. Rents keep rising, in some cases over 50% since last year. Lots of student housing is old, not suited to the daily needs of most students, and at this point barely cheaper than a room in a flatshare. Those who cannot keep up with these prices have their rugs pulled out from under their feet. One thing is clear: the housing market doesn’t regulate itself. We need immediate measures taken against these horrendous costs of living. Expensive apartments can no longer be an obstacle in the way of being able to study!

Our university is outdated. For years, we have been sitting in the same auditoriums, the same universities, bound to the same education system. What so often seems rigid and unchangeable could in fact be entirely different. We don’t want our universities to have to function like companies, and we can’t bear the constantly growing pressure to perform any more. We won’t stand for a rigid schooling, when what we want is free and critical education for us all. We demand a university that is flexible and suited to our living conditions, while still remaining a space for critical teaching.

Loud for our futures: social and environmental justice in our universities
Nearly 80 years ago the last public university programmes opened up for all genders. Since then much has happened in the fight against suppression and discrimination. We’ve continued to educate ourselves, connected with one-another and never stopped fighting. Our universities, however, seem to have gotten stuck in time. Women, people with a migrant biography, queer people and people of Colour are still very under-represented in our universities, students continue to experience discrimination on a daily basis and insurmountable obstacles still keep entire groups of people away from the university. We want to receive our education free of fear and discrimination. We want a university that reflects all facets of our society. We are loud for diverse universities!
