Student allowances that actually support studying

Housing which is affordable for all students

Conditions for studying that live up to us students

VSStÖ - Who we are

The organization Socialist Students in Austria (VSStÖ) consists of students from all around the country that are committed to improving the academic educational system in Austria.
We help out with questions concerning your studies, application, allowances and so. To cut it short we support students wherever they need us.

ÖH – Your representation

Our organisation is part of the Austrian Students Union, which tries to accomplish improvements for Students on a political level. Throughout negotiations with the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy we try to place our Ideas, concrete models and concepts for a fair academic educational system. Furthermore we offer students all around Austria free counseling to help them understand complex matters, such as the allowances system. Also we provide you with current Information to constantly keep you up-to-date. Our motto: Service that helps, politics that work. Use your vote!

All regular students have the right to vote for their representation within the Students Union (ÖH) – this also applies to foreign students!

Use your right to vote from the 27th to the 29th of May 2019!

We want more! We want a allowance system, which makes studying possible. We want proper housing, which every student can afford. We want the conditions of our studies to live up to what we need them to be! For us it is clear: Education should not be denied to anyone and has to be equally accessible for everyone- whatever sex, social heritage or passport they have.

Student allowances that actually support studying

The core responsibility of the allowance system is to support those, who otherwise could not afford to study. Momentarily our system does not life up its responsibility : It simply doesn't help everyone who would need it leaving many of us without proper assistance. The age limit and the semesters of tolerance do not reflect the actual reality students live in and the amount rarely supports an adequate standard of living.

Furthermore many students don't receive the amount of child support they would be entitled to from their parents. At the moment the only way to solve this problem is to sue them.

As students we are entitled to student allowances which allow us to properly concentrate on our studies without existential fears or having to look for a part time job.

We want more:

  • Increase of student allowances
  • Repeal of all age limits
  • Extension of semesters of tolerance
  • Automatic and direct payment of child benefits
  • Establishment of an arbitration board for allowance disputes

Housing which is affordable for all students

Finding an affordable place to rent is a hard task especially for us students who rarely have a great budget. Once we have found an apartment we are faced with high security deposits, bookers commissions and costs for fixtures and fittings.

As students we are entitled to affordable accommodation. Our Government is ignoring this problem and only comments our struggles with statements such as: If you cant afford to rent your own space just buy it!

If our minds are occupied with thinking about how we are going to be able to pay our rent  at the end of the month we will hardly be able to deliver papers or good grades on tests. The costs of living have to be affordable for everyone!

We want more:

  • Implementation of covert rents and taxes on vacant realties
  • Reintroduction of government grants for student housing and covert rents
  • Expansion of social housing especially for students
  • Abolishment of realtor fees

Conditions for studying that live up to us students

It is pathetic that in our time it still seems impossible to stream lectures or digitalise and upload skrips to some sort of online plattform. To finally arrive in the 21st century we need massive improvements when it comes to online learning.

As VSStÖ we want the kind of representation that makes sure our conditions of studying improve not only on a federal level but within each and every institution of higher education. We are committed to establishing proper (digital) infrastructure, a improved standard of staff student ratio and a more flexible way of studying which actually supports us where we need it.   For us it is clear that higher education has to be compatible with a 20h Job or taking care of kids and relatives. We need conditions that meet our needs not the other way around.

We want more:

  • Improvement of online studying
  • flexible studies that meet our needs
  • paid leave for students, who have to take a exam
  • implementation of the status part time student
