Many students have to work alongside their studies in order to be able to afford to live. Student residences that have been built especially for students should not be left empty because they are difficult to afford and far too expensive for their size. Housing for students must be affordable, accessible and adapted to their real life situation.
In addition to the high cost of living, some compulsory internships are poorly paid or not paid at all. Anyone who works full-time in a company should also receive fair financial compensation, especially if the internship is a prerequisite for graduation.
Food is a basic need and should not be a financial luxury. The Mensa is also an important social space in everyday student life. Shared meals create exchange and strengthen community. In order for everyone to be able to participate, affordable prices and a wide range of meals, including vegan options, are needed at all locations.
Tuition fees mean an additional financial burden for many and discourage them from starting a degree course at all. The removal of tuition fees is therefore an important step towards more equal opportunities and a genuinely social education policy.
Flexible learning enables students to better balance their studies, career and free time. Hybrid formats, reduced attendance requirements and courses at off-peak times promote more personalized and inclusive learning.
Timetables should be published one month before the start of the new semester so that students do not have to constantly adjust their schedules, but can reliably plan ahead. This will help students who are working or have care obligations to organize their time efficiently and avoid overlaps.
Work experience should not just be seen as an add-on, but as a valuable foundation for your studies. Students who have already gained practical experience should be able to have this credited towards their studies.
Respectful interaction creates a better learning environment for everyone. Targeted sensitisation of lecturers and students can reduce prejudices and strengthen respectful, supportive interaction in the university context. Both lecturers and students benefit from a better understanding of the realities and challenges of diversity.
A broad, free range of education and language courses make it possible to acquire skills beyond one‘s own area of expertise and to develop personally and academically. Education should not depend on your wallet, but should be open to everyone who wants to learn.
Students need third places where they can spend time without the financial pressure of having to consume something. Consumption-free spaces promote social encounters, creative exchange and mental relief in everyday university life; they are essential for a supportive and inclusive campus life.
At the same time, these spaces need to be designed sustainably: At a time when the climate crisis is catching up to us, we need to move away from gray, cold concrete walls towards innovative, green buildings. Whether green roofs, facade greening or shade provided by trees, such measures not only improve the microclimate, but also create liveable spaces that benefit both the environment and people.
Not everyone learns at the same time, so flexible learning spaces that are accessible around the clock enable individual time management. Especially during exam periods, these spaces are essential for focused and distraction-free learning.
